A Long History

In wintertime when they froze over the sailors went down the Mississippi to Baton Rouge, where they awaited a return working passage to Liverpool. An old story tells of three Carlingford seamen meeting up in a public house there all having arrived on different ships. Arthur, Barneys son bought over the house next door belonging to Peter Hughes. He ran the restaurant in the 1950s called the Slieve Foy and turned it into a hotel. A lot of the trade came from the North.  Arthur’s nephew Terry took over the premises in 1981. A warm welcome awaits any visitor to our premises. We have fourteen well appointed en-suite bedrooms. A large function room which caters for weddings and all other celebrations. Our award winning restaurant, Schooners, serves the very best produce that the Cooley Peninsula has to offer. Our Bar is atmospheric and very friendly, with live music several times a week.

The Mc Kevitt Family have been in the Carlingford Hospitality industry for five generations. Originally a bar and provisions store on Market Square in Carlingford. A guest house, bar and restaurant followed and finally in 1984 it was upgraded to hotel status. Its prime central location in the village of Carlingford means it is a natural meeting place for locals and strangers near and far. Initially this was a pub and provisions store.

The premises was run by Hugh McKevitt in early 1900s and later by Barney McKevitt, the present owner’s grandfather. Originally a ledger was held, Carlingford men who went to work as merchant seamen signed a guarantee using their land as collateral.

This ensured their families were fed while they were away and upon their return whatever monies were owed the debt was settled. Men sailed from Liverpool to The Great Lakes in USA.
